Twin Peaks Trail

The Twin Peaks trail is a quad burner! It's relentlessly uphill. The payoff is the views. Great views of Eklutna Lake from the first bench and views of the Twin Peaks from the second. We also saw a lot of Dall sheep from afar, binoculars would have been nice. Most of the hike is through birch and spruce forests, it gets a little bushier and single track towards the end. We continued up a little onto Pepper Peak until time constraints had us turn back (last photo).

Twin Peaks Trail and Eklutna Lake

One of these trips I'll make it to the end of the Twin Peaks trail. :) This trail is no joke with a toddler on your back! It's a moderate hike, there is no scrambling or anything but it's uphill the entire way and never really lets up. The trail was mostly dry with only a few patches of easily avoidable mud. Our group stopped at the large rock (really the first place with a good view of the lake) which made it a 4 mile roundtrip hike. We had a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old with us and they both hiked this fairly easily although it did get better once we had a snack. :)

Twin Peaks Trail and Eklutna Lake

The Twin Peaks trail is a moderate hike through birch and evergreens to a vantage point where you can see all of Eklutna Lake and the valley. It was a pretty wild weather day - we had wind, calm, sun, clouds, rain, snow, sleet, and fog in interesting combinations. That's also why there's limited photos of this hike, I had to protect my camera! :)

The trail maintains its intensity throughout the whole trip, except at the very end where it steepens a bit. There was no scrambling and the trail is well-maintained. It was muddy in spots but otherwise bare. After seeing the lake from high up the kids wanted to see it down low so we did a quick trip to the beach.

Eklutna Lakeside Trail

This was a Hike It Baby hike. We didn't go very far along the lakeside trail, the kids were far more interested in looking at rocks. :) The trail was icy in some places, muddy in others. I would recommend grippers and some shoes you don't mind getting dirty.

Eklutna Lake: Eydlu Bena Trail

We were ready to get out of the house and figured we'd try out a trail at Eklutna Lake. Eydlu Bena seemed like a good choice since it was just a two-mile loop. A word of warning: If you think there is even the slightest chance that there might be snow on the trails, bring your grippers. On this day the trail was covered by thick ice and a dusting of snow. It was slow and slippery going, with us earning every inch of the 150-ft elevation gain on the trail. :)  There was beautiful views along the way and the trail itself was well-marked and well-defined.

5/16/2016 edited to add: The signage along the trail has changed to reflect a different spelling of the name so I have edited my post to reflect the change.
