The drive to Matanuska Glacier from Anchorage is incredibly beautiful itself. There's Matanuska Glacier State Recreational Site at Milepost 101 with campsites and a trail with views of the glacier but no actual glacier access. If you want to actually walk on the glacier you'll have to continue to Milepost 102, turn down the hill behind the gift shop and stop at another building to pay an access fee and sign waivers.
